Art Projects

Since 2017 I have curated three international art exhibitions on behalf of the street artists of Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea (PNG). The exhibitions, held in Brisbane, QLD Australia have grown exponentially with the most recent showcasing artworks by 45 participating artists, up from 16 in 2017. The collection of exhibited works is organised on trust, built upon a thirty year association with the artists and their families.  The exhibitions provide the artists with opportunities to expand the market for their artworks and promote PNG culture to a wider global audience. Visiting PNG artists participate in the setting up of the exhibition and guiding visitors through the artworks on display which accords them skills and training in public relations and managing commercial gallery space unavailable to them in PNG.  The exhibitions have fostered strong cross-cultural relationships between the PNG and Queensland art communities.

CASE STUDY

PARADISE PALETTE 2019

Paradise Palette 2019 is the third annual exhibition that I have curated on behalf of the street artists of Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea (PNG). Held at the Royal Queensland Art Society’s Petrie Terrace Gallery the exhibition showcased the talent of 45 mostly self-taught artists, in addition to a display of 80 items of tapa cloth from Oro Province. The Paradise Palette exhibition was an outstanding success attracting over 250 visitors to the gallery on opening night. The exhibition generated interest from the PNG Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Arts in developing a Memorandum of Understanding with the RQAS and Brisbane City Council, which was a major sponsor of the event, to facilitate in future cross-cultural art events.

A symposium of contemporary PNG art at the Australian National University in Canberra following the Paradise Palette 2019 exhibition has opened opportunities for the PNG artists to exhibit more widely within Australia.
