Photography

Photography is a great art medium for capturing and sharing quirky images that tell a story, freeze moments in time, appeal to our emotions and encourage new ways of looking at the environment and the world we live in. Through my photography I aim to raise individuals’ powers of observation by focussing on subjects and angles overlooked by casual observers, while also recording the aesthetics of the built and natural environment.

My photographic style leans towards photo-journalism with an emphasis on travel photography, architecture, landscapes and portraits as major themes. Images taken by me have featured in numerous publications and been widely used to illustrate professional presentations on environmental planning, travel, tourism, architecture, and various other topics, delivered by myself and others.

CASE STUDY

NINE MILE SMILES
Nine Mile Smiles was name of the initial exhibition of contemporary art from Papua New Guinea (PNG) I curated in 2017. Many of the contributing artists resided at Nine Mile, an engaging peri-urban settlement of Port Moresby, hence the title. A component of the exhibition included a revolving powerpoint display of portraits of residents from Nine Mile. To obtain the portraits I stood with my camera outside the home of popular artist, Albert Ipu, and captured passing residents who volunteered to be photographed. The collection features a wide cross-section of individuals who call Nine Mile home.

On a return visit to Nine Mile in early 2018 the images were screened on a fence adjacent to Albert’s property and drew a crowd of over 125 curious neighbours. Such was the delight of the crowd that a second viewing was held the following evening.
